Support from a lived-experience, neuro-affirming lens

Navigate School Can't without pressure, blame, or burnout.

When school becomes impossible, everything feels urgent and unclear.  Parents need clarity, not pressure or blame.
Green Cardigan provide a clear roadmap and support system to help parents struggling with school refusal (and school distress), to take confident, compassionate next steps.

Understanding. | Safety. | Guidance. | Frameworks.

School Can't can leave you questioning your abilities as a parent. Where did I go wrong? What am I missing?  Why can't I work this out?

You've tried all the well-meaning advice you've received, and if anything, you feel even further away from where you started.

School Can’t isn’t defiance, laziness, or poor parenting.
It’s a nervous system response, and it needs a different approach.

Frequently asked questions

Who is supporting me?

Green Cardigan members are supported by our Parent Coaches and lived-experiences counsellors providing counselling, parenting information and advocacy for parents navigating school can't. Our Coaches and Counsellors offers a warm, non-judgemental, compassionate (but also no BS) approach to School Can't.

Is this about pulling my child out of school?

The short answer is 'No'. Green Cardigan isn’t about telling families what they should do, it’s about helping you understand what’s happening and make informed decisions that fit your child right now.

For some families, that includes staying in school with adjustments. For others, it may mean stepping back temporarily or exploring different options. What matters most is safety, capacity, and wellbeing, not a one-size-fits-all outcome.

Does my child need to be diagnosed neurodivergent for this to apply to us?

No diagnosis is necessary. If school is no longer working for your child, this support is relevant.

School can’t is about how a child’s nervous system is responding to stress, not a label on a report. Many families we support are still exploring assessment, and some never pursue one at all.  We are neuro-affirming which is a positive strategy for ALL children.

Is this the same as anxiety-based school refusal?

Anxiety can be part of school can't, but it’s rarely the whole picture.

School can’t recognises that many neurodivergent children are responding to cumulative stress, overwhelm, and unmet needs, not simply an anxiety or fear of school. Our approach looks beyond surface behaviour to understand capacity, nervous system load, and environment fit.

Will this help me work with my child’s school?

Yes, definitely.
We support parents to better understand their child’s needs, communicate this more clearly with the school, and advocate without escalating conflict. We also help families recognise when pushing for collaboration may be increasing stress rather than reducing it and where you can go from there.

What if my child hasn’t been to school for weeks or months?

You’re not too late.

Many families arrive after long periods of absence, burnout, or crisis. The focus is not on catching up or fixing the past, it’s on stabilising the present, reducing pressure, and rebuilding a sense of safety so future options become possible again.

Is this therapy or a replacement for professional support?

Green Cardigan is not therapy and does not replace professional support.
We provide parent education, guidance, and lived-experience-informed support to help families navigate decisions, reduce overwhelm, and better understand their child. Many families use our resources alongside psychologists, OTs, or other professionals.

You don’t need to decide everything today

The next step doesn’t need to be perfect, it just needs to be supportive.
